Meet Herminia, an inspiring mother and grandmother in a remote village in Timor-Leste who waited almost 50 years to read and write!
“I would try to buy goods, but I could not read the prices. I was lied to… Now I am going to school! I know how to write and read a little bit. I can sign my own name! I can go to the bank on my own.” – Herminia
Not only can Herminia NOW read and write, but she also pours her heart into teaching her grandchildren these essential skills, creating a powerful legacy of knowledge and love!

The fact… Almost half of Timor-Leste’s population live in poverty
Timor-Leste, Australia’s close neighbour, has shown immense resilience and determination on its path to building a stronger nation. But sadly, almost half the population, especially in remote and rural areas, continue to live in poverty.
Children either leave school early, or they never go at all. They miss out on the chance to learn, grow and escape poverty.
