Saint Mary MacKillop saw the power of education as a pathway towards self-determination, famously saying, “I’m a teacher, let’s start today!”
I spent many years in the classroom as a teacher myself, so I know firsthand the impact of education on young lives. That’s why I am so encouraged by Saint Mary’s strong drive to use her capacity as an educator to reach out to rural communities who did not have access to schooling.
Mary knew education could provide people with choice and control over their circumstances. That they can be the architects of their own futures. Because when a person has control over their own life, it means they can have the confidence to make choices that matter to them.
At Mary MacKillop Today, we do whatever it takes to continue Mary’s inspiring legacy as a growing force for change. Like Mary, we believe education is the key to improving lives so all people can flourish. And one of the most compelling ways I’ve seen this in action is through our First Nations Scholarship Program.
